Spring 2022 Service Changes

This spring, we’re continuing to improve service across the system to support our riders.

We are implementing service changes to provide the following benefits to riders:

Preserve access and quality of service for transit-critical communities

The MBTA previously increased service in transit critical communities to support better crowding standards during COVID-19. The service changes this spring aim to maintain this increased level of service.

Transit criticality is a travel-demand measure (including non-MBTA travel) that captures where low income people, people of color, and people in zero- and low-vehicle households traveled.

Provide sufficient service for returning riders

Because of changes in ridership during the pandemic, the MBTA suspended some low-ridership routes and reallocated service to transit critical communities. This spring, we’ll continue to evaluate how to best allocate service to support riders and their transportation needs.

Accommodate riders who are returning to in-person school or work

We are adding service to ensure that riders who are returning to in-person school or work can get there using MBTA transit.

Support new travel patterns and behaviors

COVID-19 has impacted how, when, and where people travel. These service changes aim to support these new travel patterns by focusing on all-day travel, off-peak travel, and weekend service on the Commuter Rail.

Service Changes by Mode

Subway Service Changes

Effective March 14, 2022

The Green Line will see weekday schedule shifts throughout the day. Green Line C branch will have one weekday trip added.

There will be no service changes to other subway lines.

Subway schedules will be posted in early March.

These routes will have more frequent service than they had in winter:

Route	32	Change	Between Cleary Square and Forest Hills, weekday service resumes in the morning, afternoon and evening. Between Wolcott Square and Cleary Square, weekday frequency decreases in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Route	455	Change	Weekday frequency decreases throughout the day.

Route	34E	Change	Selected trips omit Route 1A between Washington Street and Walpole Center and operate consistently along Washington Street instead.
Route	69	Change	When the relocated Lechmere station opens, service will operate from this location.
Route	71 and 73	Change	Due to roadway construction, all trips will use diesel-hybrid buses. To board at Harvard, use the upper busway instead of the lower. During weekday rush hours, trips will drop off and pick up at the same time. At all other times, trips will drop off and pick up at different times. Outbound passengers should pay when boarding.
Route	80	Change	When the relocated Lechmere station opens, service will operate from this location.
Route	87	Change	When the relocated Lechmere station opens, service will operate from this location.
Route	88	Change	When the relocated Lechmere station opens, service will operate from this location.
Route	112	Change	Sunday trips serve Market Basket and Chelsea Station in the morning.
Route	350	Change	Saturday outbound trips serve Northwest Park in the morning.
Route	SL2	Change	Route no longer serves 88 Black Falcon Ave due to construction. Trips will start and end at Northern Ave.

The Union Square station will join the Green Line as part of the Green Line Extension (GLX).

Lechmere and Science Park/West End, which were closed during construction, will reopen.
