Spring 2021 Service Changes
Updated April 5, 2021
We changed service to better reflect ridership levels and preserve access and quality of service for transit-critical communities.
This spring, we implemented service changes to:
Transit criticality is a travel demand measure (travel not necessarily on MBTA) that captures where low income people, people of color, and people in zero- and low-vehicle households traveled in July-August 2020.
Current ridership remains low relative to service being provided, and we have been able to accelerate service adjustments to maximize budget savings—so we can increase service frequency when it’s needed.
The MBTA has a fixed number of buses and bus operators—and COVID-19 has further impacted the availability of our workforce.
These changes balance those resources by:
- Maintaining service at reduced frequencies in some areas
- Adding service in areas where we’ve seen crowding and steady ridership throughout the pandemic
Because most of these service changes impact frequency (rather than access or span), we can monitor ridership to add service if and when it’s needed.
Our Plan to Bring Back Service
Due to an infusion of federal funding, as of April 2021, the MBTA is able to begin bringing service back to 100% pre-pandemic levels.

We did not change hours of operation or eliminate/consolidate any routes.

The RIDE
In light of the MBTA’s commitment to return the fixed route and Commuter Rail service back to pre-pandemic service levels, the RIDE will not be making the following planned changes:
- Changing some RIDE ADA trips to premium trips, complementing the changes on fixed route service
- Allowing RIDE trips to be scheduled up to 40 minutes from request time instead of the current 30 minutes
- Adjusting premium service hours to complement changes to Commuter Rail hours of service
If any part of fixed route or commuter rail service changes in the future or during the service restoration process, the impact to the RIDE’s service area and hours will be evaluated and adjusted accordingly.

The MBTA is working closely with Boston Public Schools to identify and support all students potentially impacted by service changes.
