Transit-Oriented Development at Alewife
We're preparing to redevelop facilities at the Alewife station complex as a transit-oriented development (TOD) project. The complex includes Alewife station, a parking garage, busway, and nearby Commuter Rail right of way (ROW).
The TOD will replace outdated infrastructure in the garage with a new development that includes MBTA parking. It will also include improvements to the station complex that enhance transit, improve public space, and add to the economic development and sustainable growth of the Alewife area and surrounding communities.
We'll select a joint development partner and begin project planning in summer 2025.
Project Timeline
We expect to follow the timeline below, but dates may change:
- January 2025: Issue request for proposals (RFP) for joint development partner
- Spring 2025: Review proposals
- Summer 2025: Select joint development partner, begin project planning
- TBD: City of Cambridge's zoning process for the Alewife station area
- TBD: City of Cambridge's planned unit development (PUD) permitting process
- TBD: Garage demolition and redevelopment
Community Input
We're in the process of selecting a joint development partner. We'll collaborate with them on a project plan that's practical and informed by the needs of the community.
As planning begins, we'll share opportunities for you to provide your input, including by participating in the City of Cambridge's zoning and development permitting processes.
We expect to start planning in late summer 2025. Check back for updates on how to get involved.
