Timeline: 2014-2023
Status: Design

Summary

Both the Red and Orange Line fleets will be entirely replaced by 2023, including all new vehicles for both lines. 

  • Red Line: Full fleet replacement between 2019 – 2023. In addition, the fleet will increase from 218 vehicles to 252.
  • Orange Line: Full fleet replacement between 2019 – 2022. In addition, the fleet will increase from 120 vehicles to 152.

Timeline

  • Late 2017: Testing begins on a pilot Orange Line vehicle
  • 2019 – 2022: New Orange Line vehicles go into service
  • Early 2019: Testing begins on a pilot Red Line vehicle
  • 2019 – 2023: New Red Line vehicles go into service

Benefits

Customers will be more comfortable:

  • More spacious vehicles on both lines
  • Backup HVAC systems in each vehicle
  • Redesigned handrails that are easier to reach

Vehicles will be safer:

  • Modern LED lighting systems for improved visibility on both fleets
  • Audio and visual door open and close warnings that are consistent with changes being made on other modes of transit

People with disabilities will be safer and more comfortable:

  • Wider doors to allow for boarding access even if one side of the door fails to open
  • An increase from 2 to 4 accessibility areas on each vehicle
  • Modern visual and audio communication systems

The Red and Orange lines will be more efficient and easier to maintain:

  • All new vehicles are equipped with modern, digital signal systems compatible with current and future subway infrastructure
  • New maintenance and storage facilities will have increased capacity and make it easier to repair vehicles
  • Onboard diagnostics will make data available to operators and maintenance staff so they can troubleshoot and facilitate fixes more quickly
