Green Line Train Protection System

Advancements will span across the entire Green Line system.

The Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) combines vehicle and wayside equipment to avoid train-on-train collisions, add red-light signal protection, and incorporate speed enforcement.

Note: The information on this page is outdated and will be updated soon.

Contract awarded: Notice to Proceed given January 2020
Budget: $212,000,000
Status: Wayside installation ongoing

Building a Better T

As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.

What We're Working On

This project has four overlapping phases:

  • Equipment design: planning how to integrate new components into the existing system
  • Vehicle installation: installing new equipment in Green Line vehicles
  • Wayside installation: installing upgraded signal equipment on the right-of-way
  • Operational integration: preparing the MBTA to use the new safety system

GLTPS: Benefits and How it Works

The GLTPS system uses safety monitoring equipment like radar, signals, and cameras to transmit data to the train as it moves along the tracks. Using onboard alerts and communications, the system notifies the operator and can automatically stop the train when another vehicle is detected, when a red light is present, or when the vehicle is traveling over a specific speed.

Rider Benefits

  • Safety: Reduced risk of train-to-train collision
  • Capacity: Improved travel times from fewer unplanned stops

This project is one of many we're working on to ensure twice as many passengers have access to a safer, more comfortable, and more reliable Green Line by 2030.
