Pre-Construction

GLX Constructors, the design-build entity for the MBTA Green Line Extension Project, began pre-construction activities in January 2018, in advance of construction work that is scheduled for the late spring/summer of 2018.

Pre-construction activities will continue for approximately 3 months and include:

  • land surveying
  • soil drilling/boring
  • tree and vegetation removal

Beginning in late March and into April, home owners and businesses abutting the Fitchburg and Lowell Lines will be notified directly when their individual property will be surveyed. The purpose of pre-construction surveys is to document existing property conditions prior to construction.

March – April 2018

Geotechnical investigation and utility test pit activity will continue from the Lechmere Viaduct (starting at Charlestown Ave) to the Washington Street Bridge in Somerville.

Land survey work for data collection will continue project-wide.

April 2018

Tree and vegetation removal work is tentatively scheduled to begin.

Trees will only be removed from the MBTA Commuter Rail Right-of-Way and from temporary easement areas where land owners have been notified and negotiated with during the real estate easement process.

The tree and vegetation removal work areas are limited to:

  • North of College Avenue Bridge in Medford to Washington Street Bridge in Somerville (GLX-Medford Line)
  • Prospect Street Bridge to McGrath Highway Bridge (GLX Union Square Line)

Pest control measures will begin in advance of tree and vegetation removal.

May – July 2018

Tree and vegetation removal work and geotechnical boring work will continue in these areas:

  • from Knowlton St to Lowell St
  • from the Lechmere Station area to Union Square (Prospect St)

Utility test pitting work will continue on roadways in Somerville, Medford, and Cambridge.

We anticipate fencing off parking and interior building modifications at the Community Alternatives Building (35 Charlestown St, Somerville).
