Updated on March 5, 2019
Weeknight Construction
Starting March 11, 2019, MBTA contractors will resume overnight shifts Mondays – Fridays, 8:30 PM – 5 AM, in Brookline between Brookline Hills and Reservoir stations. The weeknight work will continue through Friday, April 5.
MBTA contractors will also work in this location the weekends of March 23 – 24, April 6 – 7, and April 20 – 21.
During the first 2 weeks of work, contractors will move construction materials to the site and weld rail segments together.
Starting the week of March 25, contractors will be replace railroad ties and ballast.
The noisiest work will occur after 9 PM, when the contractor is cutting the rails with a saw or torch, and then, later in the project, when the track is being tamped to the proper elevation.
Service Alerts
Weeknight and weekend shuttles are required between Reservoir and Kenmore during this time.
Minimizing Noise
In addition to assembling track panels off-site and accessing the site through the MBTA right-of-way, the contractor can use a variety of techniques to minimize noise and disruptions to abutters:
- Use self-adjusting backup alarms, silencers, or mufflers on equipment
- Limit truck and equipment idling
- Line dumping bins, hoppers, and trucks with sound-deadening material
- Use noise blanket and shielding where possible
- Respond to noise complaints
- Provide monthly noise monitoring
