Green Line D Branch Station Accessibility Improvements
We’re making accessibility improvements at four stations on the Green Line D Branch—Waban, Eliot, Chestnut Hill, and Beaconsfield.
Along with ongoing work at Newton Highlands, this project will make the D Branch the first accessible branch on the Green Line.
- Preliminary design contract awarded: February 2020
- Projected completion: Winter 2024
- Budget: $8.7 million
- Status: Construction
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Why We’re Doing This Work
The Waban, Eliot, Chestnut Hill, and Beaconsfield stations currently have several barriers to accessibility:
- Platforms are not at an accessible height for boarding
- Track crossings are not accessible
These upgrades will improve accessibility and modernize the stations.
- Raised 225-foot platforms for easier boarding
- Resurfaced platforms with tactile warning strips
- Improved wayfinding and lighting, new benches, and call box for information and emergencies
- Redesigned accessible pathways with at least two accessible exits from each station
- Accessible parking spaces next to accessible pathways
- A faster and more comfortable boarding experience for all riders
- Better station access for pedestrians, cars, and bikes
- Improved lighting, benches, and wayfinding
