As we enter 2020, construction on the T is already underway, making the system better, safer, and more reliable. We are accelerating several projects—including station, vehicle, and infrastructure improvements—that will deliver results to riders much sooner.

As part of our $8 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.

Diversions


green line Green Line

We’ll improve service levels for more than 50,000 riders nearly 2 years faster than previously planned with 28-day closures. Each 28-day closure is equivalent to 1 full year of weekend and night closures on the C and E lines.

Work on the Green Line includes intersection upgrades plus track replacement on 25% of the Green Line (10.8 miles).

Where and when can I expect related service changes on the Green Line?

  • Green Line B: Between Boston College and Babcock Street (weekends, late May – June)
  • Green Line C: Between Cleveland Circle and Kenmore (full weekday and weekend closure, July)
  • Green Line D: Between Riverside and Kenmore (nights and weekends, January – December)
  • Green Line E: Between Heath Street and Prudential (full weekday and weekend closure, August)

Shuttles will be provided for service shutdowns.

red line Red Line

We’ll improve service levels for more than 62,000 riders 16 months faster than previously planned. This work includes:

  • Tunnel leak repairs between Alewife and Harvard
  • South Shore garages work at Braintree and Quincy Adams
  • Repairs on 32,000 feet (6 miles) of Red Line track, including floating slab work
  • Harvard Station brightening
  • Upgrades at Cabot Yard

Track repairs will eliminate 1,750 feet of slow zones, improving rider travel times by about 1 – 2 minutes per trip.

Where and when can I expect related service changes on the Red Line?

  • Between Alewife and Harvard (weekends, January – April)
  • Between Braintree and Quincy Center (nights and some weekends, March – August)

orange line Orange Line

We’ll improve service levels for more than 6,600 riders nearly 6 months faster than previously planned. This work includes:

  • Track replacement (3.5 miles) and systems upgrades at Wellington Yard
  • Station brightening

Work at Wellington will support the all-new, expanded Orange Line fleet of 152 modern, spacious vehicles.

Where and when can I expect related service changes on the Orange Line?

  • Between Oak Grove and Sullivan (weekends, October – December)
  • Between Sullivan Square and Tufts Medical Center (weekends, January – February)
  • At North Station (weekends, June – July)

Shuttles will be provided during service shutdowns.

blue line Blue Line

We’ll improve service levels for more than 25,000 riders 2 years faster than previously planned. This work includes:

  • Harbor tunnel leak repairs and track replacement (2,500 feet) between Aquarium and Airport
  • Station brightening

Track replacement will eliminate some current speed restrictions, improving rider travel times by about a minute per trip.

Where and when can I expect related service changes on the Blue Line?

You can expect service changes between Bowdoin and Airport Station (weekends, May – November).

silver line Silver Line

We’ll improve service levels on the Silver Line 16 months faster than previously planned. This work includes:

  • Pavement repairs at multiple parking facilities
  • Courthouse Station leak repairs

Where and when can I expect related service changes on the Silver Line?

You can expect service changes between South Station and World Trade Center (weekends, August – December).

Service will not shut down, but Silver Line buses will run at street level during these weekends.

commuter rail Commuter Rail

We’ll improve service levels for Franklin Line riders nearly 6 months faster than previously planned. This work includes:

  • Construction of 39,000 feet of new track on the Franklin Line
  • Acquisition of 80 bi-level Commuter Rail coaches

The second track will reduce wait times—and help keep our trains on schedule for more reliable service.

Where and when can I expect related service changes?

You can expect service changes between Forge Park/495 and South Station (weekends, January – March).

In addition to the accelerated work on the Franklin Line, we're continuing Positive Train Control (PTC) work on the Franklin and Worcester lines, as well as Green Line Extension (GLX) work on the Fitchburg and Lowell lines.
