Alternative Travel Options During Red Line Closures

Monday, August 19 – Extended to Monday, August 26: There will be no Red Line service between Kendall/MIT and JFK/UMass.

Friday, September 6 – Sunday, September 29: There will be no Red Line service between JFK/UMass and Braintree.

Transit Ambassadors and other MBTA personnel will be available to assist riders. We recommend planning for extra travel time.

Commuter Rail will be free between Braintree and South Station and Porter and North Station.

Shuttles will be available between Kendall/MIT and JFK/UMass.

  • Two accessible vans will be available at Kendall/MIT and JFK/UMass during all hours of service.
    • On weekdays only, an additional van will be available at Downtown Crossing from 8 AM – 8 PM.
    • Please see station personnel or use a station call box to request an accessible van.
  • There will be no shuttle service at Park Street and an indirect stop at Downtown Crossing. Use connections at Haymarket and State Street to connect with the shuttle.
  • Expect high ridership from 4:30 – 6:30 PM at Kendall/MIT. Consider alternative routes during this time.

There will be no Red Line service between JFK/UMass and Braintree.

Commuter Rail will be free between Braintree and South Station:

  • Use the Middleborough/Lakeville and Kingston lines for service from Braintree
  • Use the Middleborough/Lakeville, Kingston, and Greenbush lines for service from Quincy Center
  • There will be no Commuter Rail service the weekends of September 7 – 8 and 14 – 15 
  • There will be a Commuter Rail shuttle that runs directly between South Station and Braintree. At Quincy Center, use the Red Line shuttle to Braintree to connect with a Commuter Rail shuttle to South Station.

Shuttles will be available between Ashmont and Braintree. All shuttle buses and stops are accessible. You can take Red Line service between JFK/UMass and Ashmont to connect to the Ashmont shuttle stop.

About This Work

During these closures, we'll address 26 speed restrictions as part of the Track Improvement Plan. We'll perform additional work at each of the impacted stations, including lighting repairs, painting, and deep cleaning.
