Drilling Activities Complete, Surveying Continues at Newton Commuter Rail Stations
Updated on February 15, 2023
We’re continuing to advance accessibility improvements at three Commuter Rail stations on the Framingham/Worcester Line in Newton. The project's design phase is progressing from 30% to 75% completion. Currently, the existing low-level single side platforms can only be accessed by stairways at Auburndale, West Newton, and Newtonville stations.
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Drilling Work Complete
The geotechnical exploration work to support design efforts has been completed. As part of these activities, the project team conducted drilling work at Auburndale, West Newton, and Newtonville Stations. The data gathered will provide the team with valuable information to advance the project design.
We’d like to thank the surrounding community for their patience and understanding during the temporary lane, sidewalk, and parking space closures. Our team worked to complete the drilling activities as efficiently as possible, minimizing impacts and disruptions while safely and accurately gathering critical data.
Surveying Work Continues
Surveying activities to support design efforts will continue through early 2023 within the project limits at Auburndale, West Newton, and Newtonville Stations. Crews will be onsite taking measurements and collecting data but will not need to use heavy equipment. Once surveying is complete, data collection activities to support design of the proposed station improvements will be substantially complete.
What to Expect if You Live in the Neighborhood
No roadway or sidewalk closures will occur during surveying, and no impacts to riders, drivers, bicyclists, or pedestrians are expected. Surveying activities are scheduled to take place during daytime hours and will not produce disruptive noise or lighting for abutters. The project team is committed to minimizing disruptions to the community. Please note that the schedule for this work is dependent on weather and subject to change without notice.
