The Green Line Program is upgrading service on the T’s most popular light rail line.
This program will improve reliability and quality of service for riders and communities served by this line. Achieving this requires major upgrades to tracks, signals, stations, facilities and vehicles.
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.

Levels of Transformation
The Green Line Program portfolio of projects is aligned by multiple Levels of Transformation, including:
We will upgrade infrastructure to lower the risk of high-impact events such as:
- Collisions: A new train protection system
- Derailments: Track and rail upgrades
- Flooding: Water pumps and steel doors at Fenway Portal
These infrastructure upgrades will also have the following benefits:
- Improve on-time performance to up to 90%
- Remove speed restrictions by upgrading tracks and signals
Projects with this goal include:
- D Branch Track and Signal Replacement
- Fenway Portal Flood Protection
- 2019, 2020, and 2021 Track and Intersection Upgrades
- Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS)
We will remove barriers to access at our stations and on our vehicles:
- Improve accessibility of Green Line stations
- Introduce new vehicles with low-floor entry
Projects with this goal include:
- Newton Highlands, Symphony, Hynes, Brookline Hills, and D Branch Station Accessibility Improvements
- New Green Line Vehicles
- Green Line Extension
- 2019, 2020, and 2021 Track and Intersection Upgrades
- B Branch Station Consolidation
We will provide faster service for more people:
- Increase capacity by as much as 20,000 riders per hour
- Reduce boarding times at street-level stops
- Increase service frequency to less than 5 minutes between each train
- Reduce travel times with centralized digital signals and transit signal priority
Projects with this goal include:
- New Green Line Vehicles
- Green Line Extension
- B Branch Station Consolidation
We will upgrade stations, remove barriers to access, and make them easier to navigate:
- Reduce service delays with new, upgraded vehicles
- New shelters, walkways, and lighting so customers are safer and more comfortable
- Upgrade signs so stations are easier to navigate
- Provide real-time train arrival times at all Green Line stations
