Gloucester Drawbridge Replacement: Moveable Northern Bascule Span Installed
Updated on April 14, 2022
On March 22–23, 2022, we closed the channel beneath the Gloucester Drawbridge so crews could install a new bascule span on the northern side of the bridge. The bascule was shipped in sections and assembled on site. Once assembled, crews used self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) to move the bascule out to the edge of the bridge abutment.
At the abutment, a large gantry crane lifted the bascule span off the SPMTs. The gantry crane then moved the bascule out over the channel and set it in its final place on the trunnion pier.
