Gloucester Drawbridge Replacement: Moveable Bascule Span Installation
Updated on June 28, 2021
On June 7, the channel beneath the Gloucester Drawbridge was closed to boaters so crews could install the new bascule span for the southern side of the bridge. Due to its size and weight, the southern bascule span was shipped in sections and assembled on site.
The time-lapse video above shows crews using a large gantry crane to lift the bascule span into position. A similar process will be used next year when the northern span is positioned. This move took place in a single day, roughly between 10 AM and 5 PM.
This video, also from June 7, shows an aerial view of the installation of the southern bascule span. It was taken by a drone approaching from the west over the Annisquam River, focusing on the track bed and embankment leading toward the Gloucester Drawbridge.
The MBTA anticipates Commuter Rail service will be restored using the replaced southern span towards the end of summer 2021. Project completion is estimated for late 2022.
