Field Trips with the MBTA

70A bus pulling up to the Central Square stop, with backpack-wearing riders waiting

Planning a field trip with elementary, middle or high school students in the Greater Boston area and need the bus or subway to travel? The MBTA can help.

While the MBTA cannot provide charter service for school events, schools can register travel for groups of 10 or more up to two weeks prior to their planned trip to prepay for fares, making travel easy and stress-free.

Who can register a field trip?

You can only register a field trip if you are an elementary, middle or high school educator or administrator. Group outings that do not include children must register their travel using the group orders form.

Prepaid fares are available for:

  • Adult chaperones
  • Students 12 and older

Students 11 and under can ride the T for free when traveling with paying chaperones.

Once You've Registered Your Field Trip

You can register field trips through the MBTA for travel on bus and subway only. Invoices and instructions will vary based on the chosen mode.

Bus and subway

You will receive an email confirming your form submission. If applicable, we'll also send you an invoice shortly there after.

We'll send you a boarding letter 3-5 days before your date of travel.

For bus travel: You need to show the bus operator your boarding letter when you board with your group.

For subway travel: A transit ambassador in a red jacket may be present to meet your group at the station. Show them your boarding letter and they will tap your group through the fare gates. Before your trip, you can email Schooltrips@mbta.com if you'd like to confirm that an ambassador will be available to meet you.

Commuter Rail and ferry

The field trip form is for bus and subway travel only.

You must contact either Keolis for Commuter Rail travel, or Boston Harbor Cruises for ferry travel.
