REMINDER: Orange Line Service Suspension Between North Station and Oak Grove on June 22-23, Between North Station and Wellington on June 24-30

This notice serves as a reminder of the upcoming Orange Line closure previously announced on May 20.

Following up on the previous announcement on May 20, the MBTA is today reminding riders that Orange Line service will be suspended daily between North Station and Oak Grove during the weekend of June 22-23 and between North Station and Wellington from June 24 through June 30. 

During the weekend of June 22-23, free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between North Station and Oak Grove. Riders are encouraged to consider the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line for fare-free service between Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station. Regular fares should be purchased beyond Oak Grove. 

During the service suspension on June 24-30, free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between Wellington and North Station. There will be free fares at Wellington and North Station with the fare gates open. Riders are encouraged to consider the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line for fare-free service between Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station. Regular fares should be purchased beyond Oak Grove.

This service change is in place to support critical work as part of MassDOT’s Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue Bridge Superstructure Replacements project, which will replace the two deteriorated bridge superstructures and improve bicycle, pedestrian, and transit facilities. With service already suspended in these areas, the MBTA is also taking full advantage of this outage to perform Track Improvement Program work, including track and tie upgrades that will allow the removal of speed restrictions between Community College and Sullivan Square. Crews will also maximize the outage by performing signal work and station amenity upgrades, including new lighting, painting, tiling, power washing, and more. As a reminder, given the amount work to be performed, the MBTA plans to implement additional Orange Line work as part of the Track Improvement Program later this year, which is required to eliminate speed restrictions north of Wellington.

The important work accomplished during this Orange Line service suspension means riders will experience a more reliable trip with fewer unplanned service disruptions related to older tracks, older infrastructure, signal issues, or power problems. Riders will also be provided with a safer ride as a result of this state of good repair work.
