MBTA, City of Somerville, Tufts University Officially Unveil Community Art at Davis Square Station
Posted on May 6, 2008
Transportation officials joined by Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, and Tufts President Lawrence S. Bacow officially unveiled community art panels at Somerville’s Davis Square station. The MBTA in partnership with the City of Somerville and Tufts University joined two years ago to revitalize the interior of the Red Line’s Davis Square Station with the installation of large community art panels throughout the station.
Noting the importance of partnerships and what can be accomplished with community support, MBTA General Manager Grabauskas said, “This partnership demonstrates the City of Somerville’s investment in maintaining a vibrant transit system for customers to experience when traveling. “I thank Mayor Curtatone and Tuft’s President Bacow for investing in public transportation. We all benefit from this partnership.”
In July 2007, the Somerville Arts Council announced a Davis Square Call to Artists Mural Competition asking artists to submit images reflective of the spirit and vibrancy of the city for consideration. Nine images were selected and permanently reproduced onto new porcelain enamel panels. The artwork will be displayed on the platform at Davis Square station.
"This exciting installation will bring the work of Tufts and Somerville artists before the thousands of commuters, residents, and students who pass through the Davis Square station every day," said Tufts University President Lawrence S. Bacow. "We were very pleased to partner with the 'T' in a collaboration that builds on the strong working relationship between Tufts and the City of Somerville."
The MBTA, City of Somerville, and Tufts University donated $9,000.00 each towards the cost of the project. The MBTA will oversee the installation of the panels and be responsible for maintenance.
The MBTA’s art collection has grown to over 90 pieces on six transit lines.
