Upcoming Improvements To Bus Routes

Posted on December 7, 2006

General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas today announced service improvements to thirteen (13) of the T’s busiest bus routes, and the creation of a brand new bus route to service customers in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston.

The MBTA has set a goal of improving bus service throughout its service area and is presently underway with an ambitious program that will enhance the reliability and transit experience for bus customers.

“This is an aggressive program designed to respond to our customers needs,” said General Manager Grabauskas. “The initial focus is on our busiest routes, which serve some of the most transit-dependent neighborhoods. These routes carry approximately 41% of all the customers who ride any of the T’s 170 bus routes. At the same time, we will solicit feedback from customers by asking them how we are performing.”

At a press conference held at MBTA headquarters, General Manager Grabauskas introduced a program that will address overcrowding, and on-time performance with the addition of more trips and oversight by road supervisors to ensure compliance. Also announced was the introduction of a brand new bus route, route #25, that will operate along Warren Street between Franklin Park and Dudley Station every 10 minutes during the morning peak period. This route will supplement service on the most crowded portion of Routes 14, 19, 23 & 28.

The key routes which comprise the program are: Routes 1, 15, 22, 23, 28, 32, 39, 57,66,71, 73, 77, 111, 116/117 and the Silver Line. The areas that these routes encompass include Allston, Arlington, Belmont, Brighton, Cambridge, Chelsea, Chinatown, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Roxbury, South Boston, South End, and Watertown. To ensure that service operates as scheduled, bus operation’s personnel will be strategically positioned throughout the service area.
