Improved Accessibility At Rockport CR Station

Posted on June 28, 2006

Today, state and local officials gathered at Rockport Commuter Rail Station to applaud recent accessibility improvements to the station that will address the needs of persons with disabilities and the elderly. Upgrades to the station include the installation of a new accessible mini-high platform, new lighting, railings and a ramp.

At a ribbon cutting ceremony, MBTA General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas joined by Senator Bruce Tarr and local town officials reiterated the MBTA’s commitment to providing access to its transportation network to all individuals. “The MBTA strives to provide customers of all abilities public transportation that is accessible, comfortable, and safe for all,” said General Manager Grabauskas. “From reliable elevators and escalators, to raised platforms and mobile lifts to detectable platform warnings, the T will continue to focus on the needs of all customers.”

The mini-high platform made of pressure treated timber includes a canopy designed to cover both the accessible ramp and a large portion of the mini-high platform. Design and construction of the mini high platform took approximately 10 weeks at a cost of approximately $70,000. Rockport is the second mini-high project to be completed by the T’s Railroad Operations’ Commuter Rail contractor, MBCR. This past January marked the completion of the first mini – high project at Melrose Highlands Commuter Rail station. Melrose Highlands, located on the Haverhill Line recently underwent similar renovations including the installation of two new mini-high handicap platforms, with canopies, lighting, railings and ramps.

"Public transportation is important to our state and our region and it is equally important that we ensure that all citizens have these services provided to them,” said State Senator Bruce Tarr. “I am pleased to have been part of the implementation of this platform, which provides handicap accessibility for all of our citizens and I am thankful for the General Manager's
leadership on this project.”

"The Rockport Train Station project will provide a convenience for those
using public transportation, and an aesthetic enhancement for the area and the people of Rockport,” said State Representative Anthony Verga. “I am truly thankful to General Manager Daniel Grabauskas and his dedicated employees.”

Rockport Commuter Rail station is located on the Rockport Commuter Rail Line and is approximately 35 miles north of Boston. This station has 26 weekday commuter trains, 14 weekend (Saturday and Sunday) trains and approximately 88 parking spaces available for commuters.
