MBTA Completes Parking Expansion Project At Westborough Commuter Rail Station
Posted on December 28, 2005
"Today, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority announced that 142 new parking spaces will be available, effective tomorrow morning, at the Westborough Commuter Rail station. Working in collaboration with area legislators and Westborough town officials, the MBTA increased customer parking from 301 spaces to 443.
“Governor Romney has emphasized the importance of extending transit options to as many people as possible,” said Transportation Secretary John Cogliano. “These new parking spaces will help more commuters become familiar with what the MBTA already knows – commuter rail is an efficient, affordable, and convenient, alternative to the personal automobile.”
Part of the $100 million Worcester Commuter Rail Extension Project, Westborough Station opened in June 2002 and today serves some 570 daily customers. The existing 301-space parking lot at Westborough Station is generally filled to capacity by 8:00 a.m. most weekdays.
“Today’s announcement couldn’t be more timely with the inclement weather approaching and customers seeking alternatives to driving,” said MBTA General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas. “These additional spaces make it even more convenient for the customer when choosing public transportation.”
"I am so pleased that the Westborough Commuter Rail parking lot expansion is not only complete and open to the public, but that the decision to pave the lot has improved safety and created even more spaces for members of our community to use. The lot will now hold 145 spots, 15 more than originally planned, which will benefit all who use this station," stated Representative Karen Polito.
The MBTA’s commuter parking expansion program has added over 21,000 spaces over the past 15 years throughout the MBTA system. 10 weekday and 5 weekend round trips service Westborough Station. Ridership at neighboring stations is: Worcester 708, Grafton 693, Southborough 600, and Ashland 629. The Worcester line currently carries approximately 9000 customers.
