Institutional Pay Per Use (PPU)
The MBTA’s Institutional Pay Per Use (PPU) program, formerly known as the Mobility Program, is a limited fare program that allows employers to pay only for the cost of the subway and bus trips their employees take each month.
With the PPU program, employees receive fully subsidized passes that allow unlimited access to subway and local bus, making their commutes easy and free, and employers are back billed based on usage. Regardless of use, employers would need to buy a $90 monthly pass to maintain an equivalent level of access.
Our current partners include MIT since 2016 as a part of their Access MIT program, and a number of Greater Boston area employers who have joined since our first program expansion in October 2022. Participation in this program helps us understand the impact and importance of providing subsidized fares products to employers.
We are not currently accepting any new partnerships. We may announce further expansions of the program after an evaluation period.
