MBTA Community Meeting Guild Street Bridge Reconstruction

Event Description

The MBTA’s Design & Construction Project Team will present their 60% design plans for the reconstruction of the Guild Street Bridge in Norwood, MA.

Project Overview:  The Guild Street Bridge carries the MBTA Franklin Commuter Rail Line over Guild Street in Norwood, MA.  The bridge was originally constructed in 1896, and over the years, has had select repairs made to the superstructure; the bridge has surpassed its intended lifespan.  With the existing vertical clearance under the bridge at 11’-7”, the bridge has sustained some damage from vehicular collisions over the years.  The new bridge superstructure will allow for a 6” increase in the vertical clearance beneath the bridge to 12’-1”.  The proximity of the Norwood Central Train Station restricts the ability to raise the track and bridge to dramatically increase the vertical clearance on Guild Street. 

Schedule:  The MBTA is working with the City of Norwood to establish noise, operation, and traffic management programs.  Construction is expected to begin in the spring, 2016.
