Heavy Rail Operator Training Overview

After you've successfully completed the application process, you'll begin onboarding and training for your new role.

Training Schedule

You'll train for 10 weeks, five days a week, eight hours each day. You'll be paid $31.47/hour during training. Your work hours during the training period will vary daily.

Important things to note ahead of training:

  • You must bring your driver’s license and MBTA badge with you every day.
  • Your training hours will vary and include early morning or evening shifts.
  • Training could be held on weekends and holidays.
  • During your 10-week training, we are unable to approve any requests for time off, including for vacations, school, part-time jobs, etc.
  • If you cannot attend every day of training, you must reapply.

Required Uniform

Clothes

We do not provide uniforms during training. You'll receive your uniform after you complete training and serve 120 days as a heavy rail operator.

Please buy and wear the following to your training classes:

  • A light blue button-down shirt or blouse
  • A pair of solid, black or navy blue colored pants or slacks

A navy blue hat or cap is optional. Jeans are not allowed.

If you wear a long-sleeve shirt, coat, jacket, or sweater over your uniform, you must wear a maroon tie or scarf while training.

Shoes

Work boots will be provided. For your first week of training, you will need to have your own rubber-soled shoes or pair of work boots for safety purposes.

Congratulations, you are now a part-time MBTA heavy rail operator.
