Symphony Station Accessibility Improvements
Symphony Station serves the E Line in one of Boston’s busiest cultural and historical neighborhoods. We’re working on major improvements to make Symphony Station accessible and safer for our riders.

Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Why We’re Doing This Work
Several stations on the Green Line are not currently accessible. At Symphony Station, there are no step-free pathways from the entrances to the platforms, and the station can’t be accessed by people with wheeled mobility devices.
- Four new accessible elevators
- Raised platforms for easier boarding
- Accessible bathrooms
- Improved wayfinding and lighting and upgraded safety features
- Increased safety and improved service reliability
- Full accessibility and better rider experience and safety
Utility Relocation Work
We're relocating utilities in the area surrounding Symphony Station to prepare for station accessibility upgrades. These utilities are located in four different areas that we need to excavate in order to make room for new elevators and stairs.
- During utility relocation work, Massachusetts Ave will be reduced to single lanes in each direction
- Weekday traffic detours will be set up after the morning rush hour and taken down before the afternoon rush hour
- Pedestrian access and bike lanes will be maintained throughout the utility relocation work
- Temporary parking bans may be put into place depending on work areas
All utility relocation work will take place between the hours of 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM Monday – Friday.

The hotline will be answered during construction hours Monday – Friday, except holidays. All voicemails left outside of construction hours will be addressed on the following weekday shift.
Utility Work Schedule and Locations
We're relocating the utilities surrounding Symphony Station at the intersection of Massachusetts Ave and Huntington Ave, including the Huntington Ave exit and entrance ramps. The dates and locations below are subject to change according to work progress. We'll update this page as needed.
March – April 2023
Installed crack monitoring devices inside Symphony Hall, Horticultural Hall, and the east and west Symphony Towers residential halls.
April – May 2023
Installed new duct bank for Eversource northbound along Massachusetts Ave adjacent to Horticultural Hall.
- Traffic impacts: Lane closures on Massachusetts Ave northbound will be required.
May – June 2023
Installed Cable TV (CATV) duct bank northbound along Massachusetts Ave between Symphony Hall and Horticultural Hall
June – July 2023
Installed telephone duct bank southbound along Massachusetts Ave south of Symphony Hall.
July 2023
Installed CATV conduit and a handhole (small manhole) along Massachusetts Ave southbound south of Symphony Hall.
July – August 2023
Installed MBTA duct bank northbound along Massachusetts Ave between Symphony Hall and Horticultural Hall.
August – September 2023
Installed electric duct bank along Huntington Ave between Symphony Towers and Symphony Hall.
September 2023
Installed an electric manhole along Massachusetts Ave south of Huntington Ave.
Installed electric duct bank along Massachusetts Ave between Symphony Towers West and Symphony Hall.
Installed steam line on Huntington Ave and relocated gas line on Massachusetts Ave.
