Integrated Transit Programs

We're investing in large, long-term system improvements to better the quality of service for MBTA rapid transit riders and neighboring communities.
Improvements include the current programs for the Green, Orange, Red, and Mattapan lines.
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
How We're Improving Service
The programs’ capital investments address different levels of transformation, which include:
- Improving safety
- Bringing infrastructure into a State of Good Repair
- Enhancing accessibility
- Replacing legacy fleets
- Increasing passenger capacity
- Modernizing rider experience
- Expanding service
Each level of transformation aims to improve reliability and overall quality for all riders and communities connected to the T.
Prioritizing Transparency and Communication
In addition to improving service, we strive to provide clear and helpful communication with the public throughout each project. We foster collaboration among internal departments to minimize service disruptions for riders. This includes:
- Accelerating work whenever possible
- Increasing accountability through transparent reporting on progress and outcomes
Green Line Program

The Green Line Program is revitalizing the oldest transit line in the United States. This multibillion-dollar program includes new accessible stations, higher capacity vehicles, upgraded maintenance facilities and yards, new tracks and signals, and advanced technology like vehicle collision avoidance.
These projects will help improve safety, enhance accessibility, increase capacity, and modernize the rider experience on the Green Line. We're working closely with the communities of Boston, Brookline, Newton, Somerville, and Cambridge to address impacts on them and meet their needs.
Orange Line Program

The Orange Line Program is upgrading the 120-year-old rapid transit line serving the communities of Malden, Medford, Somerville, and Boston.
These projects will result in more reliable trips, and less crowding on platforms and in stations. This program will also support the expanding Orange Line fleet, increasing train capacity and rider comfort. Achieving this requires major upgrades to train yards, maintenance facilities, signals, and power systems.
Red Line Program

The Red Line Program is improving the quality of service for the T’s most popular line. These projects will help increase the frequency of service, improve reliability, and enhance operations. This program will also support the expanding Red Line fleet, increasing train capacity and rider comfort. Achieving this requires major upgrades to train yards, maintenance facilities, testing facilities, signals, and power systems.
