Shuttle Buses to Replace Weekend Fairmount Line Train Service on August 19 and 20

Posted on August 10, 2017

BOSTON – Due to Amtrak track construction work, all weekend Fairmount Line train service will be replaced with MBTA shuttle buses on Saturday, August 19, and Sunday, August 20. Shuttle buses will make stops at all stations between South Station and Readville in both directions.

On August 19 and 20, weekend train service will be replaced with shuttle buses between all stations from South Station to Readville to accommodate the replacement of an Amtrak double slip switch. These switches are installed in places where two sets of tracks cross and allow for trains to continue on either route. Replacement of this intricate track crossing necessitates unencumbered weekend access to the area in order to accomplish the work. The MBTA will also take advantage of this weekend suspension by accomplishing some Positive Train Control installations along the Fairmount Line.

After completion of this Amtrak work, weekend train service between Morton Street and Readville Stations as well as the last two outbound weekday trains between South Station and Readville Station will continue to be replaced with shuttle buses to accommodate the construction of Blue Hill Avenue Station. These shuttle bus schedules can be found at mbta.com.

On-time performance on the Fairmount Line for the past three months is approximately 97 percent. In a recent passenger satisfaction survey released by Keolis Commuter Services, the MBTA’s partner that operates the Commuter Rail, riders on the Fairmount Line reported some of the highest satisfaction levels across the entire network. The survey and additional information about its findings are available on Keolis’s website here.
