Week-long closure of Downtown Crossing Red Line North Passageway begins January 30

Posted on January 20, 2017

BOSTON – To allow for the construction of a new elevator as part of the Downtown Crossing Phase 1 Project, the Red Line North Passageway at Downtown Crossing Station, which connects the Orange Line Forest Hills-bound platform and the Red Line Alewife-bound platform, will be temporarily closed beginning at the start of service Monday, January 30, through the end of service on Sunday, February 5.

The Phase 1 project includes the construction of an elevator shaft opening into the station as well as improvements to all station exit gates, a new fire alarm system, and the creation of “points of safety” areas with fire-/smoke-rated wall and door assemblies.

During the temporary closure of the Red Line North Passageway, customers are encouraged to follow North Passageway detour signs for routes between the Red Line Alewife-bound platform and the Orange Line Forest Hills-bound platforms or to use the Winter Street Concourse between Downtown Crossing and Park Street Stations for connections between the Orange Line Forest Hills-bound platforms and the Red Line.
