Bus and Subway Fares

People aged 12 years or older who do not qualify for reduced fares will be charged the standard fare. If you are a student, senior, or someone with disabilities who qualifies for reduced fares, click on the correct category below to see applicable fares. People aged 11 and younger ride on MBTA services for free.

Tip: People aged 65 years or older and persons with disabilities qualify for a reduced fare on Bus and Subway. Seniors must obtain a Senior CharlieCard and persons with disabilities must apply for a Transportation Access Pass (TAP) in order to receive a reduced fare. Discounts apply to One Way fares only. Discounts for passes are not available.

Monthly LinkPass

Senior CharlieCard or TAP ID $30.00

Unlimited travel for one calendar month on the Local Bus and Subway. Valid on the Commuter Rail through Zone 1A when printed on a CharlieTicket.

Subway One Way

Senior CharlieCard or TAP ID $1.10

Valid for all Subway lines (includes Routes SL1 and SL2). Free transfers to Subway and Local Bus. Transfer to Inner Express Bus: $1.40. Transfer to Outer Express Bus: $2.40. Must be done within 2 hours of your original ride.

Local Bus One Way

Senior CharlieCard or TAP ID $0.85

Valid for the Local Bus (includes Route SL4 and SL5). Free transfers to Local Bus. Transfer to Subway: $0.25. Transfer to Inner Express Bus: $1.65. Transfer to Outer Express Bus: $2.65. Must be done within 2 hours of your original ride.

Inner Express Bus One Way

Travels on Routes: 170, 325, 326, 351, 424, 426, 428, 434, 441, 442, 448, 449, 450, 459, 501, 502, 503, 504, 553, 554, and 558.

Senior CharlieCard or TAP ID $2.50

Valid for the Local Bus (includes Route SL4 and SL5). Free transfers to Subway, Local Bus, and Inner Express Bus. Transfer to Outer Express Bus: $1.00. Must be done within 2 hours of your original ride.

Outer Express Bus One Way

Travels on Routes: 352, 354, and 505.

Senior CharlieCard or TAP ID $3.50

Valid for the Local Bus (includes Route SL4 and SL5). Free transfers to Subway, Local Bus, Inner Express Bus, and Outer Express Bus. Must be done within 2 hours of your original ride.

Where to Get a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket

Fare Vending Machine

Load any amount of money for One Way fares or a pass (1-Day, 7-Day, Monthly) onto a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket at fare vending machines found at all Subway stations and the following Commuter Rail stations:

Back Bay, Braintree, Forest Hills, JFK/UMass, Lynn, Malden Center, North Station, Porter Square, Quincy Center, Ruggles, South Station, Worcester/Union

To take advantage of discounted One Way fares, you can get a blank CharlieCard from an MBTA Customer Service agent working at the following stations:

Alewife, Arlington, Ashmont, Back Bay, Dudley Square, Forest Hills, Harvard Square, North Station, Oak Grove, Park, Ruggles

Get a free, blank CharlieCard and load any amount of money for One Way fares or a pass (1-Day, 7-Day, Monthly) onto it at stores located throughout the Greater Boston and Providence areas.

On-Board

You may pay for a One Way trip using cash when on-board the Bus, above-ground stops on the Green line, and Mattapan trolley on the Red line. If you do not pay with exact change, the remaining value will be stored on your CharlieCard or a CharlieTicket for later use.
