Assistive Technology Tips

For JAWS Users

JAWS users can move through the MBTA site with ease by using a variety of shortcut keys which will allow the user to move to headings, lists, edit boxes, and combo boxes within the website with just one keystroke.  Below is a list of useful shortcut keys that may assist you with navigating through the site.  (Please note that this page has been designed to provide you with a list of shortcut keys that have been found to be useful.  This page is not designed to provide you with every shortcut key that can be used.  For a complete list of shortcut keys for JAWS, please consult the JAWS Keystrokes portion of the User’s Manual.

To move to next heading: H
To move to the previous heading: Shift + H
To move to the next list of items: L
To move to the previous list of items: Shift + L
To move to the next table: T
To move to the previous table: Shift + T
To move to the next hyperlink: I
To move to the previous hyperlink: Shift + I
To move to the next edit box: E
To move to the previous edit box: Shift + E
To move to the next combo box: C
To move to the previous combo box: Shift + C
To move to the next button: B
To move to the previous button: Shift + B


Useful Shortcut Commands
Below is a list of shortcut commands that can be used when navigating through the MBTA website.

Description Shortcut Command
To display a list of form fields on the web page: Insert + F5
To display a list of headings on the web page: Insert + F6
To display a list of links on the web page: Insert + F7
To move from cell to cell within a table: Ctrl + Alt + Up, Down, Left, or Right arrow key

For Window-Eyes Users

Window-Eyes users can move through the MBTA site with ease by using a variety of shortcut keys which will allow the user to navigate through the MBTA website.  Below are some useful shortcut keys that may assist you with navigating through the site.  (Please note that this page has been designed to provide you with a list of shortcut keys that have been found to be useful.  This page is not designed to provide you with every shortcut key that can be used.  For a complete list of shortcut keys for Window-Eyes, consult the Window-Eyes Manual.

To move to the next heading: H
To move to the previous heading: Shift + H
To move to the next list of items: S
To move to the previous list of items: Shift + S
To move to the next table: T
To move to the previous table: Shift + T
To move to the next hyperlink: L
To move to the previous hyperlink: Shift + L
To move to the next form: F
To move to the previous form: Shift + F
To move to the next control (combo box, edit box, etc): C
To move to the previous control: Shift + C


Enhanced Control Search
If you type the “N” key + another key, it will provide you with an easier way to find edit boxes, combo boxes, check boxes, and radio buttons used to complete a form.  Below are a list of commands that can be used.

Description Key Command
To go to the next control (edit box, combo box, check box, etc): N + A
To go to the next button: N + B
To go to the next check box: N + X
To go to the next "checked" check box: N + C
To go to the next "unchecked" check box:  N + U
To go to the next edit box: N + E
To go to the next list box:  N + L
To go to the next combo box: N + O
To go to the next radio button: N + R

Reading Tables
“Tables Mode” must be enabled in order to read tables on the MBTA website.  To enable tables mode, hold down the Ctrl key and type the plus (+) key.  To disable tables mode, hold down the Ctrl key and type the minus (-) key.  To move to columns and rows within the table, hold the “insert” key and use the up, down, left, or right keys to move to cells within the table.

Page Navigation
Insert + Tab will display all available links, frames, tables, headings, lists, anchors, forms, controls, and placemarkers for the current web page.  You can view a list of links, headings, frames, tables, and more by selecting the appropriate radio button.

For Users Who Have Low Vision

The text color, background color, and hyperlink color on the MBTA website can be changed to meet the user’s needs through web browsers (such as internet Explorer) or through screen enlargement programs (such as ZoomText Xtra).

Altering Color Using Internet Explorer
To change the text, background, or hyperlink color on the MBTA site using Internet Explorer, please do the following:

  1. Open the Internet Explorer web browser.
  2. Select the "Tools" menu (Alt + T) and click on "internet Options".
  3. Select the "Colors" button.
  4. Make sure that the checkbox for the "Use Windows Colors" option is unchecked.
  5. Change the text, background, or hyperlink color to your liking and then click "OK". 

 

Note:  If the colors on the website do not change, you can do the following:

  1. Open the Internet Explorer web browser.
  2. Select the "Tools" menu (Alt + T) and click on "internet Options".
  3. Select the "Accessibility" button.
  4. Make sure that the "Ignore colors specified on web pages" checkbox is checked.
  5. Click "OK".

 

 

ZoomText Xtra & Color Schemes
Color schemes may also be altered through the ZoomText Xtra screen enlargement program.  To alter the color schemes using ZoomText Xtra, do the following:

  1. Activate the ZoomText User Interface (Alt + Insert).
  2. Select the "Magnifier" menu and click on the "color Enhancements" option.
  3. Alter the color schemes to your liking and click "OK".
