Red Line

Shuttle Ongoing

Shuttle buses replace Red Line service between Kendall/MIT and JFK/UMass through August 26 for track work and station maintenance. Buses are not directly servicing Park Street or Downtown Crossing. Please board at Haymarket or State. MBTA.com/RedLine

Riders are encouraged to consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Braintree and South Station as well as between Porter and North Station.
Accessible vans will be available to riders at all times. Please see station personnel or use a station call box for assistance.

Northbound - 325 Cambridge St
Southbound - 326 Cambridge St (Cambridge St @ Lindall Place)

No shuttles to Park Street and Downtown Crossing:
Riders heading southbound (Towards Ashmont/Braintree) should instead disembark at Otis Street @ Summer Street and use the Winter Street concourse to travel between Downtown Crossing and Park Street.
Riders heading northbound (Towards Alewife) should instead disembark at Federal Street @ Franklin Street and use the Winter Street concourse as well.
Shuttle buses will also serve State (on the Orange and Blue lines) and Haymarket (on the Green and Orange Lines) for easier connections to other subway lines.

Suspension Upcoming

Red Line: No train service between JFK/UMass & Braintree, Sep 6–29, due to track work. Shuttle Buses are available between Braintree, Quincy Adams, Quincy Center, Wollaston, North Quincy, and Ashmont. Commuter Rail will be free to ride.

Commuter Rail Alternatives:
Riders are strongly encouraged to use the Middleborough, Kington, and Greenbush (Old Colony) Commuter Rail lines for fare-free service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station (with the exception of the weekends of September 7 – 8 and September 14 – 15). Commuter Rail schedules are available on MBTA.com.

Commuter Rail Weekend Disruptions:
Kingston, Middleborough, and Greenbush Commuter Rail line service will be suspended between South Station and Braintree during the weekends of September 7 – 8 and September 14 – 15.

Additional Information:
Riders using shuttle buses during this service change should budget extra travelling time. For example, a rider travelling to Park Street from Braintree should anticipate an extra 40 minutes in addition to their regular commute. Again, riders are strongly encouraged to consider the fare-free Commuter Rail, when available, during this service change.
There will be increased subway service on the Ashmont Branch in order to maintain train frequency through the Red Line core between JFK/UMass and Alewife. Trains will operate at about an eight-minute frequency between Ashmont and Alewife.

Affected stops:

JFK/UMass:
There will be no direct shuttle bus service to or from JFK/UMass. Riders boarding or disembarking at JFK/UMass should utilize the fare-free Commuter Rail when possible.

The North Quincy Garage, Quincy Adams Lot and the Wollaston Lot will have fewer parking spaces available from September 1 through October 1, due to the work being done on the Braintree Branch.

Alternative parking locations are the Quincy Adams Garage and Braintree Garage.

Station Issue Ongoing

The Quincy Adams parking garage has re-opened with most parking spaces available. Customers can access the garage via the Route 3 off ramp exit as well as the Burgin Parkway entrance.

Beginning November 29, the parking lot across from the station will close. Please use the garage or adjacent surface lot as an alternative.
The Quincy Adams Garage drop-off and pick-up location will remain at its location within Level 1B.
The garage will be PayByPhone / PayByPlate with no need to pay to exit. More information on how to pay for parking is available at MBTA.com/parking.

The Braintree Parking Garage has re-opened with most parking spots available. The surface lot on Ivory St will remain open as an alternate parking option.

Riders can continue to use PayByPhone or pay-by-plate with the same parking fees as other MBTA surface lots.

Elevator Closure Ongoing

The Downtown Crossing elevator at 101 Arch St (Summer St to Red Line Alewife and Ashmont/Braintree platforms and Orange Line Oak Grove platform) is out of service.

To exit the Red Line, exit the train at Park Street Station and use Park Street Elevator 808 located at the end of the Red Line center platform to access the Winter St concourse. At the Winter St concourse, take Park Street Elevator 804 to the corner of Tremont St & Summer St.
To board a Red Line train, travel to the corner to Washington St and Winter St and take Downtown Crossing Elevator 892 to the Winter St Concourse. At the Winter St Concourse, turn left and travel up the Concourse towards Park St. At the end of the Concourse, take Park St Elevator 808 to the Red Line platform.

Orange Line Update: Delays of about 10 minutes while personnel address an ongoing signal problem near Forest Hills.

Orange Line: Expect delays on Wednesday, August 28, from from 9 AM to 4 PM due to single track operation between Jackson and Forest Hills. All train service between Jackson & Forest Hills will operate on the Oak Grove (northbound) track during this work.

Blue Line

Escalator Closure Ongoing

Bowdoin Escalator 125 (Lobby to street) is unavailable until further notice pending replacement.

The escalator will remain out of service for the foreseeable future. This decision was made after a thorough inspection determined that corrosion on the escalator’s steel truss was so severe that it could not be repaired further and that a complete replacement of the escalator would be required. Replacing the escalator at this location requires a more extended unit meeting modern escalator safety requirements. This longer unit will require significant alteration to the station entrance to meet code requirements. The MBTA has currently begun design work to understand what station upgrades will be needed.
Due to these complexities, we expect the escalator will remain out of service for a significant time. We recognize the challenges this poses to our riders, and please know we are working to identify a solution as quickly as possible. In the meantime, Government Center Station, which is fully accessible and serves the Blue Line, is under a quarter-mile from Bowdoin Station.
