Real-Time Bus Data
Every MBTA bus is equipped with a GPS device letting our dispatchers know vehicle locations in real-time. Beginning in late 2009, the MBTA began piloting the release of the real-time data used by our bus dispatchers to improve operations. Almost immediately, developers responded and began creating applications. All the tools and info you need to access the data is here — innovate away!
What about predictions?
The MBTA has a partnership with NextBus inc, to provide real-time bus arrival predictions. The feed referenced below is provided by NextBus using MBTA raw data. Using their special formula, NextBus is able to provide not only bus locations but arrival predictions for every single bus stop.
Use of the Feed
Access to the MBTA Real-Time XML Feed is governed by the language in the MassDOT Developers License Agreement in addition to the following conditions:
• The MBTA reserves the right to suspend the XML data feed, modify the feed, or modify elements of the feed at any time in the MBTA's sole and absolute discretion.
• The MBTA will not guarantee any technical support of any kind to users
• No user may execute polling commands more often than every 10 seconds. A user that polls more often than that or otherwise overtaxes the MBTA's system may be suspended or terminated from the data feed.
