Fare changes effective Friday, July 1, 2016
New fares for local bus, rapid transit, commuter rail, commuter ferry and THE RIDE will become effective on Friday, July 1, 2016, along with an expanded transfer policy and increased Student Pass availability. See below for new core fares.
The approximately $43 million in new revenue expected in fiscal year 2017 from the systemwide fare increase will be dedicated to making capital investments that will deliver short-term service improvements to our customers.
Reduced cash fare for local bus
Cash Fares on local buses will be reduced from $2.10 to $2.00.
New Transfer Policy
CharlieCard users who ride a local bus ($1.70) will be charged an additional 55¢ (total fare = $2.25) when transferring to rapid transit and may then transfer for free to a local bus.
As of September 1, 2016, M-7 Student Passes, which are pre-loaded with a monthly pass and available to middle school, junior high and high school students through their schools, will be valid seven (7) days a week during the academic year (September - June). In addition, starting in 2017, students may retain their cards during July and August and load a $30 monthly student pass, valid seven (7) days a week, at fare vending machines. The M-7 Student Pass purchased through schools offer unlimited travel on local and express buses, rapid transit and commuter rail up to Zone 2.
Students issued Stored Value CharlieCards (S-Card) by their schools will continue to receive a 50 percent "pay-as-you-go" discounted rate on fares and can purchase $30 monthly passes, valid seven (7) days a week, year-round, at fare vending machines. S-Cards offer unlimited travel on local and express buses and rapid transit only.

Children 11 and under ride free when accompanied by a paying adult.
*CharlieCard users may transfer from a local bus to a rapid transit to a local bus for the price of one rapid transit trip.
**Student, Senior and TAP (people with disabilities) CharlieCard users pay reduced fare on single rides on rapid transit, commuter rail, local bus, express bus and ferries.
To All Senior/TAP Customers:
Discounted rides and passes require a Senior/TAP CharlieCard, which can be requested, at the CharlieCard Store located in downtown Boston. Adjacent to the Red and Orange Lines at Downtown Crossing Station, the CharlieCard Store is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
