Reduced Fares

T fares and passes are reduced for seniors, persons with disabilities, and middle and high school students. Passengers who are blind/visually impaired, and children 11 years old and under when accompanied by a paying adult, ride for free. Reduced fares and passes require an applicable reduced fare CharlieCard.

To better serve you, when replacing a lost, damaged, stolen or expired Reduced Fare CharlieCard at the CharlieCard Store, you will receive a temporary CharlieTicket valid for 30 days. Your permanent Senior or TAP CharlieCard with a photo will be mailed to your home address.

Seniors

Seniors (65+) with a Senior CharlieCard can ride local buses for 85 cents, subways for $1.10, inner express buses for $2.50, and outer express buses for $3.50. Seniors can also travel on commuter rail or ferry services for 50 percent off the regular full fare. In addition, seniors can purchase a monthly pass (good for unlimited travel on local buses and subways) for $30. No discounts apply to express bus passes, commuter rail passes, or boat passes. 

Senior CharlieCards can be requested at the CharlieCard Store located in Downtown Crossing Station (Underground Concourse connecting the Orange and Red lines). Persons with Disabilities

Customers Who Are Blind/Visually Impaired

Customers who are blind/visually impaired ride all MBTA services for free with a Blind Access CharlieCard available from the CharlieCard Store. To receive a Blind Access CharlieCard, you must have a valid, non-expired ID from the Massachusetts of Registry of Motor Vehicles as well as a recently dated certificated from the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. Out-of-state customers may bring documentation from their permanent state of residence to be reviewed for eligibility.

A reduced fare may be available for customers who are not eligible to receive the Blind Access CharlieCard. See the "Persons with Disabilities" section above for more information.

Guides accompanying blind/visually impaired customers travel for free.

To better serve you, when replacing a lost, damaged, stolen or expired Blind Access CharlieCard at the CharlieCard Store, you will receive a temporary CharlieCard, which will enable you to travel free of charge on an interim basis. Your permanent Blind Access CharlieCard with a photo will be mailed to your home address. You may also call the CharlieCard Store to report a lost, damaged, stolen or expired Blind Access CharlieCard and a replacement will be mailed to you.

Note: When receiving a card by mail, it may be necessary for the CharlieCard Store to deactivate your existing Blind Access CharlieCard.

Students

Student CharlieCards are for students in Middle or High School only and must be issued by a participating school. All Student CharlieCards expire on August 31st each year and are reissued by schools for the following year.

Participating schools may opt to issue eligible students the ‘CharlieCard 7 Day Student Pass (M7)’, which are pre-loaded with a pass valid for unlimited travel on Bus, Subway, Express Bus, and Commuter Rail Zones 1A, 1, and 2 from September 1 to June 30. During the summer, M7s will function as Student Stored Value CharlieCard (S-Cards).

In addition, schools may opt to issue students the ‘Student Stored Value CharlieCard (S-Card)’. Student Stored Value CharlieCards (S-Card) allow students to travel on Local Bus, Subway, Express Bus and Commuter Rail at a ‘Pay As You Go’ 50% reduced rate. In addition, Students may purchase a Student Pass at any MBTA Fare Vending Machine at a reduced rate. S-Card Passes are valid on subway, local bus, and Express Bus, but NOT commuter rail.

Discounted rides and passes require a Senior/TAP CharlieCard, which can be requested, at the CharlieCard Store located in downtown Boston. Adjacent to the Red and Orange Lines at Downtown Crossing Station, the CharlieCard Store is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
