Reduced Fares

T fares and passes are reduced for seniors, persons with disabilities, passengers who are blind/visually impaired, and middle and high school students. Children under the age of twelve ride for free when accompanied by a paying adult. The transfer policy for reduced fares and passes is the same as it is for full fares.

To better serve you, when replacing a lost, damaged, stolen or expired Reduced Fare CharlieCard at the CharlieCard Store, you will receive a temporary CharlieTicket valid for 30 days. Your permanent Senior or TAP CharlieCard with a photo will be mailed to your home address.

Seniors

Seniors (65+) can ride local buses for 80 cents, inner express buses for $2.35, and outer express buses for $3.40. Seniors can also ride MBTA subway service for $1.05 and commuter rail or boat services for 50 percent off the regular full fare and for a discounted fare to Boston Logan International Airport. In addition, seniors can purchase a monthly pass (good for unlimited travel on local bus and subway) for $29. No discounts apply to express bus passes, commuter rail passes, or boat passes. 

Discounted rides and passes require a Senior CharlieCard available at the CharlieCard Store located in Downtown Crossing Station (Underground Concourse) Boston. Adjacent to the Red and Orange Lines at Downtown Crossing Station, the CharlieCard Store is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.Call 617-222-3200 or 617-222-5854 (TTY) for more information.

Many Senior CharlieCard holders looking to renew a lost, damaged, or expired Senior CharlieCard can do so by calling the CharlieCard Store to request a new card be mailed. Note: When receiving a card by mail, it may be necessary for the Reduced-Fare Office to deactivate your existing Senior CharlieCard.

Customers with Senior IDs issued prior to May/June 2005 must obtain a new Senior CharlieCard, available at the location noted above.

Customers Who Are Blind/Visually Impaired

Customers who are blind/visually impaired ride all MBTA services for free with a Blind Access CharlieCard from the CharlieCard Store. To receive a Blind Access CharlieCard, you must have an ID from the Massachusetts Commission for the blind.

A reduced fare may be available for customers who are not eligible to receive the Blind Access CharlieCard.  See the "Persons with Disabilities" section above for more information. If accompanied by a guide, free travel does extend to the guide.

Many Blind Access CharlieCard holders looking to renew a lost, damaged, or expired Blind Access CharlieCard can do so by calling the CharlieCard Store to request a new card be mailed. Note: When receiving a card by mail, it may be necessary for the CharlieCard Store to deactivate your existing Blind Access CharlieCard.

Students

Student CharlieCards are for students in Middle or High School only.

Participating students are issued a Student CharlieCard Pass enabling them to ride the T for a discounted rate.  Student CharlieCard Passes are good for unlimited travel on Bus, Subway, Express Bus, and Commuter Rail Zones 1A, 1, and 2.  This program is only available at participating middle and high schools. See your school administrator for details.

In addition, schools may opt for a Student Stored Value CharlieCard that will allow the student to travel on Bus, Subway and Express Bus at a ‘Pay As You Go’ 50% discounted rate.
