Transit Projects and Accessibility

State Street Station

As part of the MBTA Blue Line Modernization Project, State Station is undergoing renovations. The new station will feature lengthened platforms to accommodate six -car trains, two new elevator-equipped entrances connected to the lobbies of 53 and 60 State Street, and an accessible ramp between the Orange Line and Blue Line concourses. Additional features will include new finishes, lighting, communications equipment, and historical graphic panels.

The State Street Station project will include historical graphic panels which will reflect underground what is above ground - Boston's unique history and Freedom Trail. These interpretative graphics will include images of the Old State House, Faneuil Hall, King's Chapel, Background maps from 1722 and 1833. These are also depicted in the architecture (medallions) cast into the columns along the platform which are replicas of the Revolutionary War era uniform buttons.

The station will be completed in eight discrete stages so as to minimize disruption to service and to the surrounding area. Stages 1, 2 and 3 are now complete.  The project is currently working the 4th stage of Construction . The architect is Domenich HIcks Krockmalnic Associates of Boston.
