Aquarium Station
The Aquarium Station project is the latest in a long series of MBTA projects completed by Ellenzweig Associates. The Aquarium station is perhaps the most complex of all of many projects, involving the complete renovation of the existing Aquarium Station and the construction of a 200-foot long platform extension while retaining a fragment of the existing 100-year old tunnel and track structure.
The project transforms the existing subway station, constructed in 1904, into a bright, welcoming, spacious environment. In response to the streetscape, combinations of brick, granite, glass, and metal entrances harmonize with their surroundings. These sculptural forms, together with the station′s curved ceilings, flowing space, and integrated lighting and art, make a significant urban design contribution, as well as a vast improvement to MBTA user experience.
Sharing a strong sculptural presence, the east and west entrances evoke the contemporary design of the new station below. A third entrance is located within a State Street commercial building across from the west entrance.
