Airport Station Relocation

The new Blue Line Airport station, which officially opened on June 3, 2004, is located 500 feet east of the old station. The site serves Massport's bus system to Logan Airport, using roadways designed and constructed by the Central Artery/Tunnel Project.

The new station, designed by Wallace Floyd Design Group, is arranged to provide enhanced patron service and intermodal transfers for community and airport riders. Pedestrian and vehicular circulation is coordinated for functional, attractive, and safe access. Pedestrian entrances are available on both the inbound and outbound sides of the station, connecting to East Boston neighborhoods. Nearby Memorial Stadium Park will be linked to the station by a newly landscaped plaza.

Features include enlarged fare collection turnstiles, new elevators and escalators, flight status monitor displays, and longer platforms to accommodate 6-car trains.

A local artist, Linda Lichtman, was selected through a public process for the installation of public artwork: two stained glass walls at each entrance to the new station. The two windows, one for East Boston and one for the airport, are 36' and 40' tall, respectively. This threshold of glass is the very place where this artwork, named "Totems of Light" is located. It celebrates this moment of passage between the world, the neighborhood and the city. The station is also embellished with historic photos of East Boston and panels commemorating pioneering female aviators.
