Patriots' Day/Boston Marathon MBTA service and special fare information

Posted on April 11, 2017

BOSTON - For Patriots' Day, Monday, April 17, the MBTA is offering a One-Day Pass for unlimited travel on the subway and bus systems for just $12. There is also a $20 all-day pass for the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line, which runs parallel to the Boston Marathon route.

"Our $12 One-Day Subway and Bus Pass allows for quick and easy travel along the Marathon route," said MBTA Acting General Manager Brian Shortsleeve. "The brand new Worcester Line All-Day Marathon Pass developed in collaboration with Keolis also lets customers travel up and down the line for a flat rate of $20. We hope this gives spectators even more convenience as they take the T to cheer on the runners."

Customers interested in traveling to more than one location along the Marathon viewing route can board and disembark all day with the following options:

  • $12 One-Day Pass for Subway and Bus: Unlimited one-day travel pass can be purchased from any fare vending machine. This pass is valid for twenty-four hours from the time it is purchased, making travel in and out of MBTA stations quick and easy.
  • $20 Worcester Line All-Day Marathon Pass: Unlimited travel up and down the Marathon route for one flat rate on the Worcester Line. This pass is available for purchase through April 17 onboard Worcester Line trains and from ticket offices at North, South, and Back Bay Stations.

To find the best Marathon viewing location on the T, customers are encouraged to download the MBTA/Keolis viewing map on mbta.com, which highlights MBTA stations closest to the Marathon route.

Due to safety concerns, Copley Station will be closed for the entire day on April 17. From approximately 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., above-ground Green Line stations at South Street (B branch), Kent Street (C branch), and St. Mary's Street (C branch) will be closed. The Berkley Street entrance/exit of Arlington Station will be closed for the entire day. The Red, Orange, Blue, and Silver Lines will operate a regular weekday schedule with rush-hour levels of service before and after the race with no scheduled station closures.

All commuter rail lines will operate a regular weekday schedule with two additional trains on the Framingham/Worcester Line to support additional crowds.

Pre-marathon events are also scheduled the weekend prior, resulting in adjustments to various bus routes in and around Copley Square. Buses and trackless trolleys will operate a regular weekday schedule on April 17, though some bus routes will be detoured to accommodate the Marathon and other festivities.

All commuter boat and ferry service as well as The RIDE service will operate a regular weekday schedule.

Customers should also note that all MBTA parking garages will be pay-on-entry and cash-only on April 17 in order to ensure all customers exit in a timely manner. Customers planning to park in an MBTA garage or lot should allow additional travel time and note that some garages and lots may fill very quickly due to heavy parking demand. Real-time parking capacity information will be tweeted from @MBTA.

Bicycles are prohibited onboard all MBTA vehicles (including folding bicycles) for the entire day on Monday, April 17. Backpacks, coolers, cans, bottles, and large items are not permitted at the Marathon.
