Weekend Red Line service suspensions will allow crews to continue Winter Resiliency work

BOSTON - Over the next two weekends, Red Line train service will be suspended between JFK/UMass Station and Quincy as workers continue to prepare the subway system for upcoming winter weather. Also, nighttime diversions will continue to take place on the Orange Line into the month of December. MBTA General Manager Frank DePaola says significant progress has already been made with work crews installing 64,000 feet of brand new third rail along the Red Line in advance of winter. Crews have also replaced 200,000 linear feet of wiring for the Orange Line's third rail heating system and erected 5,321 feet of snow fencing along Orange Line tracks.

The MBTA will suspend Red Line service this weekend between JFK/UMass and Quincy Center Stations on Saturday, Nov. 28, from start to end of service, with buses replacing trains in both directions at the following stops:

  • JFK/UMass
  • North Quincy
  • Wollaston
  • Quincy Center

    All shuttle bus stops are accessible for persons with disabilities.

    On Dec. 5-6, buses will replace Red Line service between JFK/UMass and Quincy Center Stations from start to end of service.

    In the meantime, buses will continue to replace Orange Line train service between Oak Grove and Sullivan Stations the evenings of Nov. 24, Nov. 29-Dec. 3, Dec 7-10, and Dec 14-17, from 8:45 p.m. through the end of service, as crews perform Winter Resiliency Program work.

    Regular Orange Line trains will resume at the start of service the next day. Shuttling the following stops:

    • Oak Grove
    • Malden Center
    • Wellington
    • Assembly
    • Sullivan Square
