MBTA Weekend Boat Service Increasingly Popular

Posted on July 8, 2014

BOSTON – MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott has announced that the weekend of July 5th & 6th was the busiest yet for the seven-week old weekend Commuter Boat service between Hingham, Hull, Georges Island, and Boston. A total of 3,662 people used the Commuter Boats over the past weekend. Saturday, July 5th, marked the first time that ridership topped 2,000 on a single weekend day (2,128).

Over seven weekends, the boats have drawn nearly 18,000 customers for an average of 1,272 per weekend day.

Each Saturday and Sunday, there are fourteen roundtrips between Hingham and Boston’s Long Wharf, with a number of boats making stops at Hull, Georges Island, and Logan Airport. The boats depart hourly from Hingham and Boston, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., respectively. On Saturdays, there are two additional round trips at night with the last boat departing Boston at 11:15 p.m., and arriving in Hingham at midnight. A one-way fare between Hingham or Hull and Long Wharf is $8.50. The fare for Logan service is $17, but only $8.50 for those with a valid monthly Commuter Boat pass.

“We are very pleased that summer travelers have chosen this convenient and affordable way to get in and out of Boston or visit Georges Island,” said General Manager Scott. “More and more people are avoiding the hassle of driving and parking, and enjoying a stress-free boat ride into the city.”

The weekend Commuter Boat service will be available through the Columbus Day weekend in October.
