Improvements to Lynn Commuter Rail Station

BOSTON – Thursday, June 2, 2011 – Joined by State Senator Thomas McGee and Lynn officials, MBTA General Manager Rich Davey today announced improvements to Lynn Commuter Rail station.   Working closely with Lynn officials to promote public transportation and to ensure customers are provided a safe, reliable, and accommodating experience, the MBTA has made significant improvements to the station relating to security, fare vending, and the internal and external appearance of the station.  

“These are critical improvements to enhance the quality of transportation services for Lynn residents,” said MBTA General Manager Rich Davey.  “With the support of Lynn officials, we are working to promote Lynn Commuter Rail station as a safe, user-friendly facility.” 

A $160,000 investment, 20 networked security cameras have been installed to provide live viewing capability to Transit Police and the MBTA’s Operations Control Center.  Cameras have been installed in the following areas:  commuter rail platforms, stairwells, the busway, and the concourse and fare collection areas. 

Additional investments include two fare vending machines installed in the busway allowing Central Square bus customers the opportunity to purchase fare media in advance. This will allow for faster boarding and increased payment options for these customers. 

To showcase the recent improvements to Lynn station and promote customers and non-riders to take advantage of available parking at the station, MBTA General Manager Davey also announced one week of free parking beginning Monday June 6 through Sunday, June 12.  The MBTA for seven days will waive the $4.00 parking fee. 

“These improvements are the result of a collaborative effort between a number of stakeholders including commuters, state and local officials,” said State Senator Thomas McGee.  “This type of investment will not only improve the safety of the station, but will also make it more user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing.  Additionally, I urge Lynn residents to take advantage of this parking promotion and come see the improvements for themselves.”

 “The improvements to the Lynn Commuter rail station will drastically increase both the safety and convenience for passengers who use the station every day,” said Representative Fennell.  “ The delegation has worked tirelessly on this issue the past few years, and I especially applaud Senator Thomas McGee’s efforts as the chairman of the Transportation committee in making this upgrade a priority.  Clearly, the security cameras will make the station a much more desirable location for travel both towards the North Shore and Boston, and I expect these improvements will also help improve the downtown area.”

“I applaud the MBTA for their commitment to the Central Square Station,” said Representative Steven Walsh. “They have shown great willingness to work with the citizens of Downtown Lynn by participating in community meetings and addressing safety issues. These renovations are a direct result of a successful partnership between the MBTA and the Downtown Lynn residents.”

“I am happy to see the MBTA provide this special promotion to the community in Lynn,” said Mayor of Lynn Judith Flanagan Kennedy. 

Lynn commuter rail station located on the Rockport commuter rail line serves 860 daily customers.  One way fare is $4.75 9(zone 2) and a monthly Charlie Ticket is $151.00.  25 round trips between Rockport and Boston stop at the Lynn Commuter Rail station providing customers with a 23 minute ride into North Station.  On site station parking accommodates 965 vehicles including 23 accessible spaces at a cost of $4.00 per day.
