North Shore Communities Get State-Of-The-Art Buses

Joined by Lynn Mayor Edward Clancy and state and local officials at the Lynn Busway, MBTA General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas announced the roll out of a brand new fleet of Emission Control Diesel (ECD) buses to North Shore communities served by the T.  A total of 70 camera and bike-rack equipped buses will be deployed into service at a rate of five buses per week through the fall.  These buses operate under the most stringent engine exhaust emissions regulations.

Delivering the great news, General Manager Grabauskas announced the delivery of the first 23 buses, which were put into service immediately.  “We are making sound investments in our bus system to improve the transportation experience for all our customers,” said Grabauskas.  “Great strides have been made to replace old, unreliable buses with new, dependable, environmentally friendly vehicles with low-floors for easy access.  For the North Shore, once the delivery is complete, 80 percent of the bus fleet will be brand new.”

Part of the MBTA’s overall commitment to improving bus operations, $750m has been spent on MBTA buses, including equipment, facilities, and maintenance since 2000.  Most recently, the South Shore’s Quincy Garage received 65 brand new emission control diesel buses, and prior to that the Charlestown Garage received 155.  In addition to the delivery of 70 buses to the Lynn Garage, 20 new buses will service inner city routes out of Cabot Garage in South Boston.

"Bus riders in Lynn and throughout the North shore will benefit greatly from these new state of the art buses, which will be safer and more comfortable," said Representative Robert Fennell. "By utilizing new technology that will significantly reduce emissions, this will be a win-win situation for both commuters and the environment."

24 bus routes originate from the Lynn Garage serving 12 North Shore communities including: Beverly, Chelsea, Danvers, Lynn, Malden, Marblehead, Peabody, Revere, Salem, Saugus, Swampscott, and Wakefield.  Approximately 26,000 customers’ board each weekday with Route 116 the most heavily used carrying 4,388 customers.
