Elevator Replacements: Alewife, Forest Hills, Quincy Adams, Quincy Center, and Ruggles Stations

On July 24, 2009, the MBTA authorized design services for the elevator replacements at Alewife, Forest Hills, Quincy Adams, Quincy Center, and Ruggles Stations. The project is in response to an agreement with the Boston Council for Independent Living (BCIL) to improve accessibility throughout the MBTA system.

The elevator replacements were anticipated to be completed in 2014. However, design services were delayed because of impending Code changes and updates to the MBTA Design Standards and Specifications. Ongoing design services will incorporate the MBTA updates and the revised Code requirements.

Bid documents are scheduled to be completed in Spring 2015. The construction duration is anticipated to be sixteen months, beginning in Summer 2015 and completed by Fall 2016.

The Stations will remain open during the construction phase with replacement bus services for customers requiring elevators to the Orange and Red Line stations.
