Alternative Travel Options During May and June Orange Line and Commuter Rail Closures

There will be overlapping Orange Line and Commuter Rail closures from May to June.

During the closures, we'll:

Transit Ambassadors and other MBTA personnel will be available to assist riders. We recommend planning for extra travel time.

May 17 – 19: Shuttles Replace Weekend Service Between Oak Grove and North Station Starting Friday After 8:30 PM

Alternative Service

Riders who are commuting downtown are strongly encouraged to use the Commuter Rail on the Haverhill Line during this closure. The Commuter Rail will be free between North Station, Malden Center, and Oak Grove.

  • Shuttles are available between Oak Grove and North Station after 8:30 PM.
  • The Haverhill Line will be free between Oak Grove, Malden, and North Station May 17.
    • Orange Line closures will overlap with the Haverhill Line closure May 18 – 19. During this time, riders are encouraged to take the 137 bus route. This route will be free.
  • Fare gates will remain open at North Station to ensure riders do not pay additional fare.

May 20 – 23: Shuttles Replace Service Between Oak Grove and North Station After 8:30 PM

May 20 – Summer 2024: Haverhill Line Commuter Rail on Weekday Construction Schedule

Alternative Service

commuter rail The Haverhill Line will operate with limited service on weekdays from May 20 through summer 2024.

  • There will be no inbound service to North Wilmington.
  • Riders commuting via the Haverhill Line will be rerouted via the Wildcat Line on weekdays 8 AM to 3 PM.
  • Riders may take the 137 bus route between Reading and Oak Grove. This route will be free.

May 28 – June 6: Shuttles Replace Service Between Wellington and North Station

Alternative Service

Riders who are commuting are strongly encouraged to use the Green Line. For riders commuting downtown, the Haverhill Line will be rerouted via the Wildcat Line.

  • Shuttles are available between Wellington and North Station.
  • The Green Line will replace service between North Station and Copley and Back Bay. 
    • For connections from the Green Line at Copley and the Orange Line at Back Bay, riders will have to take a short walk.
  • Riders commuting via the Haverhill Line will be rerouted via the Wildcat Line on weekdays 8 AM to 3 PM.
    • There will be no inbound service to North Wilmington station on the Haverhill Line.
  • Riders may take the 137 bus route between Reading and Oak Grove. This route will be free.
